🗞️ WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
New Laws to Protect Adelaide's Crown and Anchor Hotel as Music Venu

Image: Peter Malinauskas fb page

Specific legislation protecting the Crown and Anchor Hotel as a live music venue well into the future, and safeguards for key Adelaide pubs from noise complaints by future residents will be introduced by the Malinauskas Labor Government.

The Details:

  • The commitment comes after the State Government, developer Wee Hur Holdings Ltd, and Save the Cranker campaigners worked hard to reach an agreement that has gone a long way towards satisfying all parties.

  • According to the deal, the agreement will have the developer abandon the plans for demolition of all but the façade of the live music hotel in Grenfell Street, in return building a 19-storey student accommodation building.

  • Instead, the State Government will bring in special purpose legislation to allow the developer to build up to 29-storeys on the site adjoining the hotel, with the State Commission Assessment Panel to consider the application within 10 business days of the development application being lodged.

  • This new bill will ensure that the Crown and Anchor Hotel is saved from demolition or building over it, along with its functions as a hotel and live music venue in perpetuity.

 What Now?

As of Friday 23rd August 2024, the full wording of the legislation has not been released and this according to Save the Cranker campaign Team.

A statement will be issued to the community once details are known. The community can expect to hear an update by the end of next week.

The Save the Cranker campaign is committed to staying and continuing to support the community through the transition period and beyond the closure of the Crown and Anchor Hotel.

The campaign is working with the current owner, Skip, to find a solution and remains committed to making sure that the government and Wee Hur stand up to their commitments. They get how insecure and precarious this time is.

 State Government of Adelaide:

To further entrench the reputation of Adelaide as UNESCO's City of Music, the State Government will also introduce amendments to planning laws to protect major live music pubs in the area of the City of Adelaide from neighbour complaints.

The bill will demand an installation of noise attenuation and or acoustic treatments on future developments built alongside key live music venues.

Why It Matters:

This will establish suburbs that support local establishments and add to Adelaide's cultural character, helping to maintain the city's thriving live music scene. The state government is working hard to ensure that Adelaide remains a fabulous location for entertainment and music while protecting these venues.

Bottomline:

The government is ensuring a future for live music venues by ensuring that no venue can be closed based on noise complaints. This will, in turn, make the city attractive to locals and visitors alike, adding richness to the vivid diversity of Adelaide's entertainment scene.

🈺 BUSINESS
Alert Issued: Beware of Bitumen Bandits in South Australia

There is a new warning to be on the lookout for these shady tradesmen as bitumen bandits are on the loose across South Australia.

The details:

  • This week alone, the state's consumer watch dog, Consumer and Business Services, has received one report of the bandits touting for business in Kilburn.

  • A group of men last week visited an industrial site on Prospect Rd, offering 'free bitumen' left over from another job and began offloading their machinery.

  • A worker intervened and asked questions of the bandits to which they revealed it would in fact cost $15,000 for the work proposed and sent them on their way.

  • This follows fresh reports from the same bandits being at work in Para Hills West, Wasley, and Ninnes, trying to scam South Australians out of more than $35,000.

 What is Bitumen bandits?

Bitumen bandits roam, unlicensed traders that travel from town to town targeting both homes and businesses, claiming to have leftover bitumen from a previous job and, for a cheap price, will do the work.

However, the work is of a poor quality, and consumers are invariably left out of pocket, striving to afford remedial work to rectify the chaos they are left with.

Andrea Michaels MP is working in conjunction with state and federal agencies, including the South Australian Police and Border Force, to identify bitumen bandits and gather evidence of their offenses. This is a collaborated effort that seeks to ensure that regulators share information so as to catch them at a very early stage.

 How much is the penalty?

If a person carries out building work without a license, such a person commits an offense punishable by a fine of $50,000 if a person and $250,000 if a corporation. For accepting money without proper cause under Australian Consumer Law, the penalty is $2.5 million if a person and up to $50 million if a corporation.

Any person who may have come in contact with these people are encouraged to contact Consumer and Business Services on 131 882 or at www.cbs.sa.gov.au/contact-us as soon as possible because one of the difficulty is usually that the scammers will have relocated to a new location before a complaint is even lodged.

 Why It Matters:

You should report them straight away to prevent further damages to other potential victims and to hold these people responsible for their actions. Enforcement of consumer law violations and unlicensed building work are key factors in consumer protection and industry integrity.

Bottom line:

It also maintains industry integrity and protects consumers while stopping the harm that could be perpetrated against potential victims. You have the power to stop more harm from happening and hold criminals responsible for their actions.

ATTRACTION
Arkaroola International Dark Sky Sanctuary

Arkaroola

Image: South Australia.com

The second Australian Dark Sky Sanctuary, the first in South Australia, was attained by Arkaroola in July 2023. That makes it an International Dark-Sky Sanctuary—a place with exceptionally dark and starry night skies. Unlike Dark-Sky Parks or Reserves, Sanctuaries are more remote, so the quality of starry nights and nocturnal environments is that much better.

The area surrounding Arkaroola, high in the far-northern Flinders Ranges, boasts world-class atmospheric transparency and seeing qualities for astronomy due to its arid climate and high elevation. The remoteness from towns makes the Arkaroola skies very dark, and the Wilderness Sanctuary enforces a "low light" policy in the evenings.

Three fully equipped astronomical observatories are available at Arkaroola above the Village and one virtually at its reception area, designed and operated to give an unforgettable stargazing experience. Visits to each of the three observatories by professional and amateur astronomers, astronomical societies, clubs, and Advanced Ecotourism Accredited Astronomy Tours are possible.
