Concrete pouring and other important activities are being completed on the Tonsley Technical College construction site. Sarah Constructions has been working at the Tonsley Innovation Precinct on the project. One of the two colleges in the Adelaide metropolitan area is the Technical College. The Heights Technical College and Tonsley Technical College are scheduled to open for enrolment in 2026. The five new technical colleges in South Australia are currently accepting applications for the academic years 2025 and 2026, allowing students and their families to begin preparing for their future careers. It coincides with the groundbreaking of the world-class advanced manufacturing facility at Flinders University, which will unite business, academia, and researchers to build sovereign capabilities in critical areas like digital technologies and defence. The Flinders' Factory of the Future, slated for construction next to Tonsley Technical College, is a product of a partnership between the federal, state, and private sectors aimed at leveraging the defence industry's potential and enhancing the capabilities of the regional manufacturing sector. With a $208 million commitment from the State Government, five technical colleges will operate by 2026, with three located in metropolitan Adelaide, one in Port Augusta, and one in Mount Gambier. Families can now get a firsthand glimpse at what a contemporary technical college looks like thanks to the opening of Findon Technical College. Several of the most well-known companies in South Australia are partners with our technical institutes, guaranteeing that the students receive the training required to be well-positioned for safe, lucrative professions. Construction on Tonsley Technical College, which will collaborate with the local Australian Science and Mathematics School, is expected to begin in the middle of next year. This year's start date was postponed due to the unanticipated discovery of hundreds of square metres of concrete beneath the site. In order to lessen the construction project's carbon footprint, timber products will be used in it that are acquired from the NeXTimber pine mass timber factory at Timberlink in the south-east. The Tonsley Technical College is an employer partner of the Australian submarine firm ASC, which will offer job pathways into the defence industry for pupils. With almost 1,900 skilled workers, ASC can meet the continuous demand for labour.

This beneficial employer collaboration will also support the technical college's advanced manufacturing and engineering programme, assisting in ensuring that graduates are prepared for the workforce. The Motor Trade Association (MTA) and the Master Builders Association (MBA), two essential South Australian group training organisations, have partnered with Tonsley Technical College to offer job opportunities and apprenticeships with host firms around South Australia.

The technical college will focus on industry specialisations in the areas of defence, building and construction and sustainable technologies:

  • Advanced manufacturing and engineering

  • Automotive and energy

  • Building and construction

Flinders University's Factory of the Future is supported by grant funding from the Australian Government and $9 million in funding from the South Australian Government.
