The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), Australia's national regulator, has officially registered Adelaide University as a higher education provider. This choice represents a significant turning point in the establishment of the new university and shows that the stringent governance and academic requirements needed to obtain official registration have been satisfied. The maximum of seven years has been allotted for TEQSA registration. The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia will merge to form Adelaide University, which is expected to open for business on January 1, 2026. Late last year, the State Parliament passed legislation establishing the institution. This came about after a thorough investigation by the Parliamentary Joint Committee and community consultations concluded that the state would greatly benefit from the establishment of a new, forward-thinking university.

The two universities are working together to carry out a thorough planning and implementation process, and the transition period is currently well under way. The establishment of research and student support funds, as well as the acquisition of university land, are among the $464.5 million in funding that the South Australian government has committed to the establishment of Adelaide University. SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said With the formation of Adelaide University, we have the opportunity to build an institution that delivers unprecedented value to students, staff and our community.
“ The South Australian Government is committed to supporting the universities to get this right from the outset.
Achieving TEQSA registration is a significant achievement, reflecting the collective effort of many individuals who are passionate as I am about future-proofing South Australia’s higher education system.
Adelaide University has demonstrated an early commitment to meeting the high standards expected of a new higher education provider – a trend we’re looking to continue as we work with both universities towards an operational commencement date of 1 January 2026.” He said.
