Specific legislation protecting the Crown and Anchor Hotel as a live music venue well into the future, and safeguards for key Adelaide pubs from noise complaints by future residents will be introduced by the Malinauskas Labor Government.

The Details:

  • The commitment comes after the State Government, developer Wee Hur Holdings Ltd, and Save the Cranker campaigners worked hard to reach an agreement that has gone a long way towards satisfying all parties.

  • According to the deal, the agreement will have the developer abandon the plans for demolition of all but the façade of the live music hotel in Grenfell Street, in return building a 19-storey student accommodation building.

  • Instead, the State Government will bring in special purpose legislation to allow the developer to build up to 29-storeys on the site adjoining the hotel, with the State Commission Assessment Panel to consider the application within 10 business days of the development application being lodged.

  • This new bill will ensure that the Crown and Anchor Hotel is saved from demolition or building over it, along with its functions as a hotel and live music venue in perpetuity.

 What Now?

As of Friday 23rd August 2024, the full wording of the legislation has not been released and this according to Save the Cranker campaign Team.

A statement will be issued to the community once details are known. The community can expect to hear an update by the end of next week.

What now?

The Save the Cranker campaign is committed to staying and continuing to support the community through the transition period and beyond the closure of the Crown and Anchor Hotel.

The campaign is working with the current owner, Skip, to find a solution and remains committed to making sure that the government and Wee Hur stand up to their commitments. They get how insecure and precarious this time is.

 State Government of Adelaide:

To further entrench the reputation of Adelaide as UNESCO's City of Music, the State Government will also introduce amendments to planning laws to protect major live music pubs in the area of the City of Adelaide from neighbour complaints.

The bill will demand an installation of noise attenuation and or acoustic treatments on future developments built alongside key live music venues.

Why It Matters:

This will establish suburbs that support local establishments and add to Adelaide's cultural character, helping to maintain the city's thriving live music scene. The state government is working hard to ensure that Adelaide remains a fabulous location for entertainment and music while protecting these venues.

Bottomline:

The government is ensuring a future for live music venues by ensuring that no venue can be closed based on noise complaints. This will, in turn, make the city attractive to locals and visitors alike, adding richness to the vivid diversity of Adelaide's entertainment scene.
